About Artist
Chiagozie Austin (b. 2005, Lagos, Nigeria) is a Nigerian visual artist and final-year Painting student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His practice is driven by an endless curiosity to create, experiment, and discover the different possibilities within art. Working primarily with painting and mixed media, Chiagozie explores themes of human identity, self-expression, perception, and everyday experiences. A defining element of his practice is his use of emojis as symbolic visual language. By bringing these familiar digital expressions into his artworks, he explores how seemingly casual symbols can carry deeper emotions, experiences, and meanings. His work invites viewers to look beyond the surface and recognize parts of themselves within the images and emotions presented. For Chiagozie, art is a continuous journey of self-discovery. He believes in creating without limiting his possibilities, allowing each work to reveal something new about himself and the people who encounter it. Through his practice, he hopes to create a space where people can see, question, and embrace who they truly are. ARTIST STATEMENT My art is a journey of creativity, self-discovery, and endless possibilities. I explore human identity and emotion through painting, using emojis as a familiar yet meaningful visual language. I want my work to make people pause, connect, and recognize something honest about themselves within what they see.
